Archival Collections
This inventory provides a quick reference to over 1000 archival collections about Alberta women.
What is a Collection?
A collection is an accumulation of documents, letters, diaries, memoirs, family stories, photos, audio or video tapes and artifacts that together help us to reconstruct, to remember and to preserve the life story of an individual, a family or an organization.
The collections in this inventory are found in Alberta archives and they were chosen because they document women’s lives and activities in Alberta since 1836. Archives name collections that are donated, organized and catalogued “fonds”.
Use these tools – the alphabetical inventory list, the broad topic headings or the search tool - to find collections that you may use in your research. The subject headings correspond to those on the Archives Network of Alberta.
If you click on an entry in the inventory, you will reach the individual fonds description, which provides the name of the public archives where the collection is held. If you click on the archives URL there it will take you to the home page of the archives.
If you click on the fonds title at the top of the entry you will access the search page for the Archival Network of Alberta website. Here you can enter the fonds title and get more details about the content of the collection, and, in some cases, gain access to digitized records from the collection in the other online databases hosted by the Archives Society of Alberta called Alberta InSight and Alberta InWord.
